Spy Week 2014

Sunday 6 April, 8:30pm. Film screening of Powell and Pressburger’s The Spy in Black, introduced by Prof. Penny Fielding (Head of the Department of English Literature, University of Edinburgh), at the Edinburgh Filmhouse.

Monday 7 April, 6pm: Spy Fiction Quiz in Caffe Nero, Blackwell’s Bookshop, 53-62 South Bridge, Edinburgh.

Tuesday 8 April, 6pm: A presentation on ‘John Buchan and the Scottish Spy Story’ (Prof. Penny Fielding and Dr Simon Cooke, University of Edinburgh).

Wednesday 9 April, 8:30pm: Film screening of Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps (introduced by Dr Simon Cooke, University of Edinburgh) at the Edinburgh Filmhouse.

Thursday 10 April, 6pm: Film screening of Martin Ritt’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (with introduction by author Charles Cumming).

Friday 11 April, 5:30pm-7pm: Dame Stella Rimington’s Keynote Lecture: “Espionage in Fact and Fiction”, the Playfair Library Hall, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh.

Saturday 12 April, 2pm-5pm: Teviot Dining Room and Middle Reading Room:

  • 2-3pm: Talks on the history of spy fiction by members of the English Department, Dr Anna Vaninskaya, Dr Jonathan Wild, Dr Simon Cooke, Prof. Penny Fielding.
  • 3.30pm-5pm: Round-table discussion with Spy Fiction Writers Charles Cumming, Jeremy Duns, Tim Stevens, Dame Stella Rimington.
